Call for Book Chapter Proposals

New Media and Cultural Application of Religion (Provisional title)

 

New Media, including digital and social media play a central role in producing and reproducing cultural discourses and practices. The presence of new media has not only brought changes in the way religious beliefs are practiced but also the ways religious meanings are expressed through new media. Unpacking the nexus of media and religion, Meyer (2006) notes that the adoption of new audiovisual media drives the ways within which Pentacostal practices are presented. Moreover, social acceleration mediated by the new media does not only increase the speed of spreading the Gospel and drive competition among churches but also provides ways of reconfiguring the appropriation of mediating and mediatizing the Christian faith (Faimau, 2007; Togarasai, 2012). Therefore, while the presence of new media mediatizes religion, the new media also provide a venue for socio-religious acceleration as well as individualized and engaged digital religious practices. This proposed edited collection seeks chapters examining how the global revolution of new media has provided a venue for various religious cultures, discourses, practices and participation.

·                   The impact of media in church

·                   Cultural implications from social media use in and for religious activities

·                   Media culture and religious society

·                   Trends and practices for media consumption in religious activities

·                   Methodologies approaches in addressing new media and religion

 

Objective of the Book

This book aims to be an essential reference source for further research opportunity in media and religion. This book will also shed light on the role of digital and social media, and the way they play a crucial role in cultural application on religion globally.

 

Target Audience

Academics, researchers, research institutions, policy makers and governments will find this text useful in furthering their research exposure to various pertinent topics around the nexus between new media and religion, in particular Christianity.

 

Publisher

The editors have approached Palgrave Macmillan for publication of the proposed edited volume.

 

Submission Procedure and Deadlines

Researchers are invited to submit on or before September 15, 2016, a short bio and proposal (500 word limit) clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by October 03, 2016 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Those accepted would be invited to present their draft chapters at a two-day workshop to be held in Gaborone - Botswana in March 2017. The workshop will be funded by the Nagel Institute through the generous support of the John Templeton Foundation in the USA. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis.
